Từ nguồn cảm hứng đầu tiên này, một thời gian sau đó, tháng 2 1971. Chàng trai Ralph Gorin, một sinh viên thuộc đại học Stanford đã thực sự tạo ra một chương trình kiểm tra chính tả tiếng Anh, chứ không phải nghiên cứu. Đây là phần mềm SPELL cho máy tính DEC PDP-10 tại Phòng thí nghiệm Trí tuệ nhân tạo của Đại học Stanford.
Nhưng sự thiếu một hệ điều hành ổn định và một phần mềm soạn thảo văn bản mềm dẽo đã khiến cho tương lai của phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả bị dậm chân tại chổ trong gần 10 năm.
Đến một thập niên sau, năm 1970, một nhóm sáu nhà ngôn ngữ học từ Đại học Georgetown đã hợp sức nghiên cứu phát triển thành công phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả đầu tiên cho tập đoàn IBM.
Thế nhưng, các công cụ kiểm tra chính tả này chỉ tồn tại giới hạn trong các phòng nghiên cứu tại các trường đại học. Mãi đến hai thập niên sau, vào những năm 1980, khi máy tính cá nhân xuất hiện cùng hệ điều hành MsDOS thì phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả thương mại mới được xuất hiện. Và WordCheck được công nhận là phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả tiếng Anh đầu tiên trên máy tính cá nhân.
Với giá cả khá đắt đỏ, công chúng vẫn chưa có thể sử dụng các phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả tiếng Anh. Mãi cho đến khi hai ứng dụng xử lý văn bản nổi tiếng Wordstar và Worderinf chính thức tích hợp chức năng kiểm tra chính tả vào ứng dụng của mình, thì chức năng kiếm tra chính tả mới được phổ biến và đến gần với người dùng.
Chức năng kiểm tra chính tả bước lên trình duyệt internet
Sau khi phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả chính thức hiện diện trên các máy tính cá nhân từ thời hệ điệu hành Ms-DOS, rồi sau này là Windows.
Đến năm 2006, trong phiên bản Firefox 2.0, chức năng kiểm tra chính tả trên trình duyệt web đã được chính thức tích hợp trong một trình duyệt internet.
Tại Việt Nam, chức năng kiểm tra chính tả cũng đã xuất hiện trong trình duyệt Cốc Cốc từ năm 2017.

Phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả tiếng Việt, nói đúng hơn là chức năng kiểm tra chính tả tiếng Việt, đã xuất hiện từ lâu trong các phần mềm soạn thảo văn bản từ thời Ms-DOS như Telex, Bkav….
Đến khi máy tính cá nhân được nâng cấp lên hệ điều hành Windows thì các phần mềm kiểm tra chính tả vắn bóng trong một thời gian khá lâu.
Một thời gian sau đó, chức năng kiểm tra chính tả tiếng Việt xuất hiện trong các phần mềm gõ tiếng Việt như Vpsell… Nhưng vì hoạt động không hiệu quả nên các phần mềm này đã không còn được duy trì phát triển.
